Where did the mythology of genies originate? And what inspired it?

Genies, or jinns, come from a mideast/Persian origin. As for what inspired them, I can only guess. It's likely genies were the gods of conquered tribes, worshipped in secret by the conquered. They were demonized, much like the Christians demonized pagan gods, and reduced to wish granters.
