What are the devices and 'hidden' messeges in this poem by Edger Poe?

The poet expresses his disappointment with life which he deems is but a dream within a dream and therefore not real. He cannot hold onto love and hope, anymore than he can hold onto the grains of sand which fall from his grasp. I believe the surf tormented sea is a metaphor for his live and all its disappointments.
