Why are a lot of Americans obsessed with Italy?

It seems like everybody that has a vowel at the end of there name and likes pasta is Italian. It makes me angry how some people that I have met say they don't even know the capital of Italy let alone they claim they are Italian....I don't believe Italy produced that much Italians....lol
